Mar 21: Let Your Students SHINE

Language, Culture, and Literature Courses with Project SHINE (Students Helping in Naturalization and English)

March 21, 2018
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Modern Languages Building Room 201
A light dinner will be served.

Vialla Hartfield-Méndez, Director of Engaged Learning in the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and Professor of Pedagogy in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Johannes Kleiner, Civic and Community Engagement Coordinator in the Center for Civic and Community Engagement in Campus Life will introduce and discuss work with Project SHINE. SHINE is a community engagement program focused on the refugee, migrant, and new American communities in metro-Atlanta. Since 2004, SHINE has engaged more than 2100 students and more than 20 community partners. Currently about 130 students participate in SHINE every semester as a co-curricular activity.

In this workshop, Hartfield-Méndez and Kleiner will present strategies for incorporating civic and community engagement into your classes— including sample language, budget and risk management considerations, transportation, as well as assessment—and highlight some of the transformative experiences students have had over the years. There will also be time to ask questions about Civic and Community Engagement and CFDE resources. A student leader from Project SHINE will join part of the conversation. A light dinner will be provided!
