María José (Mumi) Vélez
Graduate Assistant for Engaged Learning
María José (Mumi) Vélez (she/her) is a PhD candidate in Hispanic studies at Emory and the graduate assistant for engaged learning at the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence. In this role, she supports community-engaged learning grants and faculty workshops. Her research brings together medical anthropology, feminist theory, and Latin American studies. Her dissertation examines how migrant and Indigenous women in São Paulo, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, navigate reproductive health and family planning amid structural inequality. She has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Argentina, Brazil, and Kenya, and her teaching focuses on health, language, and cultural practices in Latin America.
