Planning Your Class: Things to Consider
The CFDE's Donna Troka shares a few resources to help you make your class more inclusive:
- Visit Tulane’s “Accessible Syllabus” site for tips and tricks on how to make your syllabus accessible to as many students as possible. You will find the website here. My favorite page is reader-friendly text.
- The Chronicle of Higher Education’s guide on how to make your teaching more inclusive.
- The CFDE guide on Inclusive Pedagogy.
- A guide on preferred gender pronouns from Hampshire College.
- Think about guidelines for engagement for your class, that is, how will you structure discussion. You can start with a few and then grow the list with your students. Some examples:
- Listen respectfully, without interrupting.
- Respect one another's views, even when you disagree with them.
- Criticize ideas, not individuals.
- Commit to learning, not debating.
- Avoid blame and speculation. Support your argument with evidence.
